It’s coming up to my blog-day. My blog’s birthday, that is. I began this journal in June of 2003 with a post called Gotta Start Somewhere.
At the time I had no idea what I was doing, or what I would write about. It wasn’t even blogging, yet—I was coding the site by hand at that point.
I had a vague idea of chronicling my attempts to get my songs out there in the world. Before long, I had intuitively connected that with my efforts in backyard carpentry and gardening.
As it turns out they’re pretty much the same sort of thing, and I’ve learned a lot about that by writing in this space.
The seeds I plant and tend; the songs I hear and sing; the decks I build and rebuild—and don’t get me started on sheds..
My backyard has loomed large, and now that I’m learning to let go of it, all the more so.
Last year, after losing a mighty maple tree that my dad had known as a kid, I looked at the story arc of this little lot in a post called Then and Now.
I added pictures to that post – one of the yard when I first took it over; one as it was in the height of a seedy summer, stripped of its tree.
But the sight of it nearly broke my heart, and I ended up excluding the pics. I’ve posted them above, for the record. I feel a lot better about the place now.
I may be leaving, but I still live here, and my heart goes into this garden until I’m gone.
Here’s to these years of backyard rambling, and here, spruced up for springtime, is the backyard I’ve mostly rambled in.
And about.
