Tapestry: Finding my birth father’s grave

david-newland-memorial-garden-2

That’s my shadow on the snow in a memorial tree park in the suburbs of Red Deer, Alberta.

The 4 x 4 stake in the ground marks the final resting place of my birth father – a man I never knew.

We barely had a relationship when he was alive. For thirty years I had no clue who he was. We spoke a couple of times by phone, and then he slipped from my life again.

Years later, I found out he had died. It took a further decade for me to pay my respects

I’m grateful to CBC “Tapestry” for sharing my story.
