I am in the final stages of putting together the most ambitious artistic project of my life so far: my new CD, NORTHBOUND. This is my fourth CD (but fifth album, if you count the tape “Of Moose And Men” in 1995!) and I believe it represents my very best work, musically speaking.
This culminates 6 years of immersing myself in Arctic lore, including multiple trips to the High Arctic with Adventure Canada; composing a body of work and assembling a band to play it; establishing relationships with collaborators; touring the songs; writing a show; and finally delivering it all in a live performance on November 3, 2018.
The album was recorded at Trinity United Church, just around the corner from where I live in Cobourg, and it represents a homecoming in more ways than one.
The CD release for NORTHBOUND at Hugh’s Room Live on April 26 will be a celebration, featuring my band Uncharted Waters, our close collaborators Siqiniup Qilauta (Sunsdrum) and special guests including Alex Cheung, Drew Gonsalves and Kirsten Jones.
Michael F. Nunan, who did numerous recording projects with me including my greatest “hit”, Riding on the Railway, brought his brilliant ears to this recording and it sounds sublime. And Luke Despatie has done simply splendid work on the album cover design!
Among all the supporters, including the fans who pre-purchased the CD to help fund production, I must single out the Ontario Arts Council. The receipt of a Popular Recording Grant allowed this highly collaborative, multi-cultural, multi-lingual project to proceed. I will be forever grateful for their support!
