I first met G R Gritt at a Folk Music Ontario conference some years ago, and kept my eye on them. Our occasional conversations have always been soul-searching and eye-opening in equal parts.
G R Gritt is a remarkable guitar player and composer, a JUNO-award winner with Quantum Tangle, and a former regional finalist in the CBC Searchlight competition.
What I’ve been most inspired by is their exploration of identity as a Trans, Francophone, Anishnaabe-Metis artist.
Our conversation covered culture loss due to colonialism, family ties, ancestry and relationship — all with reference to the single Quiet Years from the new album, Ancestors.
