Every now and again somebody asks, “what’s with the ukulele, anyway?”
And I have to explain – why the ukulele has become my main songwriting instrument; why I play mostly ukulele in The McFlies, and especially, why I spent two years hosting the Corktown Ukulele Jam.
I’ve been on CBC radio’s The Gospel According to Uke and CBC Newsworld’s Weekend Scene, in the pages of most of the papers and on stages of various folk festivals all because of the uke.
My Flea Has Gods is a sort of a sermon that expresses the power of the uke, and I’ve written a bit of doggerel called the Ukulele Benediction that sums it up.
Still, people keep asking, as if it wasn’t obvious already.
Now I’m working on an album that includes a bunch of my uke-based tunes, and that will probably make sense of it in a big way. I hope so.
In this space I’ll just say that the ukulele brings people together, helps them sing, and makes them smile.
If that doesn’t explain it, nothing will…
